Tune of today

Chillwave is the new black.

Tune of Today

I like this tune, because its daycint!

SBTRKT’s self-titled debut album has gotten good reviews all round. If the rest of the LP lives up to ‘Wildfire’ James Blake won’t be the only post-dubstep artist making all those end of year lists.

Since the ever knowledgable Albert Twomey of Plug’d Records recommended Marnie Stern’s self titled 2010 album to me a few weeks ago I have been well and truly addicted. It is fucking rockin. Think Sleigh Bells meets Fang Island…and then some! This is the opening track and the album doesn’t stop to take a breath from the first second to the last.

From his astonishing 2010 album to his brilliant recent show in Dublin, I’ve had plenty of good things to say about Will Wisenfeld aka Baths. Pop Music/False B-sides is Baths latest offering. It’s not exactly the follow-up album to Cerulean, Wisenfeld has a bundle of new songs on his hands, some of which he dropped at the Workman Club, Pop Music/False B-sides is a collection of these songs. It lacks the cohesion of Cerulean, the slower tunes are much more melodic while the experimental numbers have extra bleepy effects. While not the complete album, it rarely misfires and has undeniable moments of beauty, like this.

Tv is rarely a source of new music for me these days. Gone are the days MTV2 (I will not call it MTV Rocks) and NME TV were my go to reliables for new tunes, fuck it even P-Rock Kerrang! and Scuzz had their moments. Now all that seems to exist are channels dedicated to the Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon.

And then, just now, I saw this on MTV…2’s show Biggest! Hottest! Loudest!

Breathtaking both musically and visually.

Tune of Today

I was walking through Cork listening to one of the more chilled out playlists on my iPod when a track I didn’t recognise came on, which in itself is a rare occurrence, I mean I had to have heard the tune to put it in the playlist. Such was its impact it made me forget bout the rain and my rumbling belly. Múm are one of those bands I’d heard my brothers mention ages back as being really cool and underground and kinda like Sigur Ros but better cos fewer people talked about them. Today after hearing this tune, I am officially interested to hear more.

Tune of Today

The second great track I’ve come across from their new album Hot Sauce Committee Pt 2. A brilliant combination of old school Beastie’s hip-hop with a laid back funky reggae sound courtesy of miss Santigold.

Tune of Today

It has taken me a while to broaden my musical horizons. For a long time I confined myself to a limited number of bands and a limited sound, mostly post-rock, which I still love, but I realised that I was blocking myself off from a world of fantastic music. One area which I’ve really been meaning to get into is the whole soul/rhythm/blues but I just don’t seem to know where to start. Nialler9 as always proved a useful resource today enabling me to discover this gem from Londoner Michael Kiwanuka. Lovely.
